New to the world of Field Guides in southern Africa are the beautifully prepared multi-coloured maps produced specially for the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund by Guy Gibbon. These maps have 3 shades for each colour, reflecting the density of reporting rates (or abundance) of birds in the region. Below each map is a breeding bar showing the full and peak breeding season for all breeding birds. Also for the first time, this region now gets a true field guide that is not merely an identification guide, with space being allocated for the supply information on food and breeding, though this had to be kept to a minimum obviously because of space restraints. This is also the first field guide in the region to fully utilize all space on the text pages!

Because this guide follows the new bird order adopted by the Roberts 7 handbook, a comprehensive pictorial Quick index is spread over the inner front cover of the book and is followed on the following page by an alphabetical quick index. A quick guide on ‘How to use this book’ is placed on the inner back cover for easy access.

Publishers and Author

This guide is published by the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund through Africa Geographic in Cape Town. The author is Hugh Chittenden, who was assisted by Guy Upfold. Guy played a major role in the layout of plates and breeding bars. Guy Gibbon produced all the bird maps.
